About this Item

ADAMS, Henry. Mont Saint Michel and Chartres. Original cloth with gilt-lettered leather spine label. Washington: [Privately printed], 1904. First edition. BAL 38. One of 100 copies. Presentation inscription on the front free endpaper, "To Mrs. Walker Gay from Henry Adams, August 1905." Matilda Travers Gay (1856-1943), a childhood friend of Edith Wharton, was the daughter of William R. Travers, a prominent New York lawyer, man-about-town, and founder of the Saratoga race track, for whom the Travers Stakes is named. She was married to Walter Gay, termed by the New York Times, "the dean of American painters in France" Walter and Matilda Gay lived in France for most of their lives and were the center of a large circle of friends, including Adams, Wharton, Elsie de Wolfe, and Henry James. Matilda held a salon and entertained lavishly at her Paris apartment and chateau near Fontainbleau. Both Gays appear with some frequency in Adams's letters. See William Reider's A Charmed Couple: The Art and Life of Walter and Matilda Gay. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase with leather label. A very good or better copy of a rare book.
