About the Author: Daniel Martin is Professor of French at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst). Born in Madrid, Spain, he was raised and educated in France. A resident of the U.S. since 1961, he received his Ph.D. in French from Yale in 1973 and has been at UMass ever since. Founder of the journal Montaigne Studies (1989), published by the University of Chicago, he is the author of three books on Montaigne and of an annotated facsimile edition of Montaigne's Essais, all published in France by Champion and Nizet.
