pp. xxiii, 145. No illustrations. Yellow & Black 3/8" squares checkerboard design (not cloth) with a black cloth spine and gilt lettering on the spine. Corners are beginning to show rubbing. Cover has mylar now. 15 chapters. Written by a newspaper reporter who was in California as volunteer for service in the War with Mexico as a unit intended to contribute as colonizers before the Gold Rush. It took 5 months for the Unit to go around the Horn! In 1849 after his discharge he took part in the search for Gold. Well written with good descriptions of events he witnessed. No writing inside.
