About this title

Synopsis:

This is the story of my life with cerebral palsy, caused by a mosquito-borne encephalitis, which I got when I was thirteen. Much of the book takes place in Hong Kong and California. It is about my loves and adventures and the struggle with my severe disability. It's an upbeat book about an unusual life.

About the Author:

Born in Greeley, Colorado in 1925. Became disabled at age thirteen, in 1938, with post-encephalitic cerebral palsy. Graduated from College High School in Greeley and received a scholarship for "brilliant scholarship despite many handicaps." Received my B. A. degree in 1946 from University of Northern Colorado. Moved to Marin County, California in the same year. Wrote book reviews for the San Francisco Chronicle and later for the Examiner. Visited Hong Kong for nine months, had DT's, quit drinking; married a Chinese, returned to Marin. Divorced and began writing nature editorials for the San Rafael Independent-Journal. Returned to Hong Kong in 1960 for six months; married a Chinese; returned to Marin. Divorced; returned to Hong Kong in 1966 and became Hong Kong editor for Business Digest. Covered the Red Guard riots. Back in Marin, joined Adaptive P. E. Program, a pioneering program, at College of Marin. Learned to manage electric wheelchair. In 1985, Mother, my lifelong support, died. Sold family home and moved to adjacent town of Greenbrae. In 1996, decided to retire to Belize. Moved in 1998; returned same year due to inability to adjust to the different environment. Now returned to Marin and College of Marin, and writing a book about my Belize adventures.
