About this title

Synopsis:

Schools are basically social systems. Members' morale, relationships and their cultures' values are their central attributes. This book shows how understanding schools as social systems can lead to increased effectiveness and illuminates numerous contemporary educational issues: public-private school morale and cultural differences, administrator-board conflicts, the "why" of gender differences in morale and ethical behavior, schools' attributes necessary for effective moral education programs, university cultures' contribution to student disruptions, how systemic understanding of schools as social systems alters priorities for reform.

About the Author:

Douglas Heath, Harvard Ph.D. in clinical psychology, is professor emeritus, Haverford College, where he taught psychology for 30 years. Researcher and author of numerous articles and ten books, he has lectured and consulted worldwide with hundreds of schools, colleges, youth, and other organizations. His new books, Morale, Culture, and Character: Assessing Schools of Hope and Assessing Schools of Hope: Methods, Norms, and Case Studies build on his longitudinal studies of adult development in "Lives of Hope" and on "Schools of Hope" and summarize extensive studies of thousands of students and teachers in the States and abroad.
