xiii [3] 528pp, engraved portrait frontispiece (curled and slightly frayed at fore-edge, offset onto title page), contemporary calf, rebacked with most of the original (darkened) spine relaid, worn to the extremities with the boards showing, early signatures on flyleaf (William Hawkins), verso of portrait (Sarah Fowler? 1775) and title (Henry Hawkins), short tear in top margin of U8 and lower fore-corner of Y1 torn away not touching the text in either case, a few light spots, rear endpapers waterstained, 8vo (20.5x12.5cm), ESTC T127561. Elizabeth Griffith was an 18th century dramatist, novelist, essayist and actress. She is best known for this work, significant as one of the earliest attempts at literary criticism by a woman.
