First edition of this translation, printed in only 250 copies: powerful translations (Adam Freudenheim), scalpel-sharp (Sammy Jay), dark but quite beautiful (Rebecca Rego Barry, Fine Books Magazine). Gottfried Benn (1886 1956) wrote Morgue in 1912, when he was only 25. It was his first published work. The expressionist verse, inspired by Benn s work as a pathologist, shocked readers at the time, but the edition, printed in 500 copies, sold out within eight days. AKL 7, 352. - "Im März 1912 erschien die erste Gedichtsammlung von Gottfried Benn als Lyrisches Flugblatt im Berliner A.R. Meyer Verlag unter dem Titel 'Morgue und andere Gedichte'. Der Zyklus machte den jungen Arzt über Nacht berühmt und gilt bis heute als Meilenstein modernen Lyrik. Die Bilder aus dem Leichenschauhaus und dem Sektionssaal, die Beschreibungen organischen Siechtums und Zerfalls stellten eine offene Herausforderung des herrschenden bürgerlichen Geschmacks dar [.] Georg Baselitz' [.] 'pandämonische[.]' Bilder lösten 1963 während seiner ersten Einzelausstellung in Berlin einen Skandal aus und wurden beschlagnahmt.
