Description:

Blue, glossy color-illustrated boards with yellow lettering. 130 pp. Profusely illustrated in color. "George Cartlidge [1868-1961] was trained and worked over a particularly creative period in the pottery industry, from the 1880s to the 1920s. Art and design education was highly important and Cartlidge's surviving student work reflects both his own skills and discipline and the standard of his teachers. Cartlidge was to the fore in developing and utilizing new design styles and technological changes which were a constant feature of the period, including modern tile production methods such as firing in 'tunnel' ovens. As a craftsman potter and artist he showed remarkable dexterity and creativity. Cartlidge could well have remained one of the many unsung heroes of the Potteries, were it not for the diligence of his descendents and the two better known aspects of his work: the 'Morris Ware' range designed for S. Hancock & Sons which rivalled Moorcroft's tube-lined designs and the 'photographic' portrait tiles which found popularity at home and in America. It is the tiles [sic] range which has caused controversy and debate amongst writers and collectors for several decades. In this book, Tony Johnson surveys existing knowledge and opinion and offers, finally an authoritative account of their production." (foreword, Deborah Skinner). As new internally but with lightrubbing to covers. Bookseller Inventory #
