Synopsis: MORTAL LOVE traces the story of five central figures, the devastating impact of love on them and the ways in which their lives are intertwined. The plot set in Jerusalem, Hungary and Greece, leaping back and forth in space and time. The main characters are Beno Gottzeit, a Holocaust survivor, his daughter Edna, son-in-law Zohar, painter-lover Margit and Ilias, a Greek-Orthodox monk.
This is a story about love, evil, memory, identity and above all, destiny. The novel was a bestseller in Hebrew (Ahava Anusha, Am Oved Series,1992) and translated to English by Yael Politis. A German version (Liebe wie der Tot) translated by Helene Seidler, is forthcoming. Here are two excerpts from the Israeli press:
"Unusual, compelling...a book of artistic and intellectual integrity...uplifting, cathartic experience of a Greek tragedy, as described by Aristotle..." Prof. Ziva Shamir, "Maariv"
"A deep and challenging exploration of the devastating impact love has on five central figures..." Jeff Green, "Jerusalem Post"
From the Author: This novel was built on powerful childhood memories and stories told by people close to me. Imagination and fantasy are the filling materials and the chapters are written in first and third person, connected by short "fragments", representing sessions of psychotherapy that illuminate the plot from different angles, style "Rashomon".
The non-linear plot gave me the freedom to explore the human nature in different places, different times, under different circumstances and try to raise questions, like: to what extent do we shape our lives? What happens when we ignore our fundamental traits? Is there predestination?
The answers are up to my readers.
Writing this novel gave me much joy and pain.
