Synopsis: Moscow is indisputably one of the great cities of the world, and Masha Nordbye's fascinating guidebook is an invaluable companion for the visitor. Nordbye takes the reader on grand tour of the entire city, providing information on where to find shops of every kind (from secondhand samovars to crystal antiques), restaurants for any kind of budget (including Cuban and Vietnamese cooking), theater and opera, and much more. Special sections examine topics such as the Trans-Siberian Railroad, Russian bathhouses, and the story of the Faberge eggs, together with a sampling of literature by authors such as Alexandre Dumas, Leo Tolstoy, Theodore Dreiser and Walter Benjamin.
From Library Journal:
Moscow, the present capital, and St. Petersburg, the imperial capital until the revolution of 1917, are today called Russia's "capital cities." With populations of over ten million and five million, respectively, both are major historical, cultural, and industrial centers of the nation. Because relatively few Russians speak English, good guidebooks are essential for getting around in Russian cities and towns. Neither of these offerings has adequate maps for walking tours, but they contain a wealth of information to enrich any trip if absorbed beforehand. The text is organized around topics such as history, culture, and facts for travelers, with sections on food and drink, sightseeing, hotels, environs, practical tips (e.g., about hotels, restaurants, and churches), and a glossary. Interspersed throughout are full-page and longer excerpts from Russian literary figures. About a third of the Moscow volume is devoted to the Golden Ring, a series of nearby ancient towns that are considered the cradle of Russian culture. These handsomely illustrated volumes are printed on high-quality stock and are lavishly illustrated. Nordbye is a writer and film producer who has made many films on Russia, while Lanza is a freelance and contract photographer for the National Geographic Society.
