About this Item

New edition, presumed first thus (NAP) . Softcover, staplebound, approximately 4 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches, original chromolithographed covers (seated goose with group of children on front cover; Jack Sprat and wife flanking a Delft blue plate on rear) , nonpaginated (approximately 48 pp) , well illustrated with black and white drawings (words only, NO music! ) . Fair to good. Covers detached, with a few wrinkle lines there, approximately 1/2 x 1 inch chip off inside of rear cover, several lesser nicks. Internally, 3 inch tear on inside edge of title page, 1/2 inch tear on outside edge, 1 inch tear on side edge of another leaf, several lesser nicks and chips, lightly age yellowed, foxed, otherwise unmarked and complete. Somewhat politically incorrect version of Mother Goose, noting that the old lady who lived in a shoe whipped her children before sending them to bed, with an accompanying illustration of her spanking a bare-bottomed child, "Fol de Rol" showing a dead pig shot by the tailors arrow, "Pussy in the well" mentionuing that the cat was deliberately drowned, also with appropriate illustration, etc. Less common, non-bowdlerized Victorian version of the tales, when life was a bit harder. Children's; nursery rhymes. Bookseller Inventory # 36817

Store Description

Nestled in a valley in the Endless Mountains, where the temperature can dip below freezing even in mid-June, sits Frost Pocket Farm. While our harvest of organic produce may be subject to the whims of nature, the crop of books is always a good one. The selection is as varied as the interests of its proprietor. A native of NYC, who dissipated his youth and more mature years in used bookstores and reading, as well as earning degrees in history, biology, banking and counseling plus studying 2 years at the University of Paris, he is constantly acquiring quaint and curious volumes, as well as the more mundane, on every imaginable subject. Low overhead means low prices geared towards the trade and the savvy retail client. To the extent possible, we use recycled packaging material (economy and ecology are both dervied from the same Greek root), and all books are shipped in corrugated cardboard. Every attempt is made to accurately describe the books, including their faults, and everything is completely guaranteed! (Sorry, we are strictly mail order, and due to insurance and other concerns cannot accomodate visitors.) On-line booksellers since 1996; ancient for this business!
