About this Item

Engraving from the atlas volume of Duflot de Mofras' Exploration du Territoire de L'Oregon, des Californies et de la Mer Vermielle. Two maps on one sheet. Sheet size: 12 x 19 3/4". Frame size: 21 3/4 x 27 1/4". Inventory#: p1939pfat. These two highly important maps are just about the first published charts of San Pedro and Santa Barbara harbors, California. No earlier plan of either sit is listed in Phillips, Maps of America. The plan on the left (San Pedro) shows the modern-day harbor of Los Angeles. The area was virtually devoid of settlement in 1844. Santa Barbara was more highly developed, with a small town ("Pueblo"), the mission, and "Presidio" (ruined) clearly maked. Wagner calls this work "one of the twenty rarest and most important.dealing with the history of California.". Bookseller Inventory # 001939
