Synopsis: This illustrated book is the first to introduce the reader - climbers and non-climbers alike - to the numerous mountain ranges, summits and remote inland regions of the Antarctic. This is a book intended for mountain and travel lovers interested in discovering what is probably the largest unexplored stretch of land on the planet. For the first time, readers will be able to contemplate the hidden treasures of the great South and discover its most remote mountain regions. The publication focuses on the mountains of Antarctica and will appeal to a wider public than strictly climbers by including numerous descriptions of the mountain ranges' geography and glaciology; exploration and travel history; profiles of adventures; climbers and sailors; many anecdotes; practical information, etc. Being a mountaineering book, it also contains unique practical information intended for all who plan an expedition in these regions (technical data; routes; approaches; equipment; transport, etc.). A large number of original high quality photos and specially drawn maps illustrate the book.

About the Author: Over seven Antarctic summers since 2001 Damien Gildea has climbed many of Antarctica's highest peaks, several by new routes and made a number of first ascents. In 2000-01 Damien worked as a guide for ANI on a 1130 km ski journey to the South Pole. He is the youngest Australian to ski to the South Pole and the first Australian to have guided a client to the South Pole. Damien has also climbed on the Antarctic Peninsula, both as a guide and doing GPS work. In 1998 he wrote the Antarctic Mountaineering Chronology, the first and only reference book on climbing in Antarctica and South Georgia. Since then he has written numerous journal and magazine articles on climbing 'down south'. He is the Antarctic correspondent for the American Alpine Journal, Alpinist magazine (USA) and Climb magazine (UK). Since 1995 Damien has done several trips to the Himalaya and Karakoram, mainly to lesser-known areas. He has summited solo on popular peaks like Aconcagua, Sajama and Denali and climbed technical ice routes in New Zealand, Canada and the Alps. When not on expedition, Damien lives in Australia.
