About this title

Synopsis:

Describes the characteristics of mountains, how they are formed, how they affect the weather, and how they are used by people.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-6 While the format of these books makes them look appropriate for primary grades, difficult concepts and terminology (interlocking spurs, deposition and plunge pool, among them) may make them more useful to slightly older children. Each contains 13 2-page chapters, illustrated with color photographs and illuminating diagrams. Scientific terms appear in bold and are also found in the extensive glossary. Mountains explains how they affect the weather and climate, control the flow of rivers, and separate species of plants and animal. The formation of mountain ranges through faulting and folding, the plate tectonics theory, and erosion and weather patterns are simply described. The habitats associated with various zones (arctic, temperate, etc.) and their inhabitants are explained in context of the almost identical ``living'' zones found on mountains. Bramwell also includes comments on the dangers of clearing mountains of their protective forests. Rivers and Lakes explains the origins of these water sources and their development. Specific habitats and wildlife associated with each water body are described. The remarkable properties of water and its function as ``nature's bloodstream'' are apprised. Bramwell details drought, underground rivers, water at work, and pollution. These volumes could be used for both research and teacher-guided explorations.
