About this Item

A hand-colored illustration of a schoolmarmish-looking woman -- someone who would be pegged a spinster -- whose head can be moved forward and back with a pull tab. N.d., circa early 1850s. (The envelope used to send the card has a Benjamin Franklin regular U.S. stamp that was issued from 1851 to 1856, plus the type of printing and card and the dress of the woman all point to the 1850s.) The card measures 19 by 13 cm. The card is a "poison valentine" lite. The eight lines of verse are not as vicious and derisive as many a poison valentine, which was a popular genre of humor cards of the time. Rather, the verse begins speaking of the woman's good points, BUT . . . What follows is more of a backhanded compliment, and a recipient was unlikely to take kindly to the unctuous, so-called constructive criticism offered by the sender: "My purpose is not insult but true love, Not the romantic stuff of hill and grove, but a sincere regard which speaketh plain, And pointeth out the follies of the vain. You possess many of the graces rare,/ That should adorn and deck a lady fair, But then your follies like weeds mid rose, All your other charms successfully opposes." The card proper is surrounded by a doily lace-like fringe. With the envelope in which the card was sent. Minor damage to the frilly fringe. Light soiling of the card. Bookseller Inventory # 003465

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
