About this Item

Second Thousand. 8vo; viii,208,32(publisher's catalogue)pp, with 13 text woodcuts. Original publisher's royal green pebbled cloth, covers paneled in blind (arches-style), spine lettered and decorated in gilt, chocolate-brown end papers, period owner's stamp top of half title. A superlative example, binding clean, tight. and unmarred; text fresh and bright, barring light foxing to endpapers and several pages within text. Freeman 837. Originally published in the ninth volume of the Journal of the Linnean Society, in 1865. Our copy is the first hardcover edition (second edition overall), second thousand. Only 500 copies were printed, making this, Freeman believes, "probably the smallest issue of any [John] Murray Darwin" title. Darwin described the origins and writing of this book in his autobiography, where he noted: "Some of the adaptations displayed by climbing plants are as beautiful as those by Orchids for ensuring cross-fertilisation." N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Bookseller Inventory # BB1490
