About this title

Synopsis:

Mr. McGill and four of his friends agree to help each other finish their chores so that they will all have time to go to the town fair.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Five men--a miller, a farmer, a mason, a wheelwright, and a farrier--find that if they help one another with their respective tasks , they can all get to town before the sun goes down and have some fun. The text is cumulative, with ample use of repetition and rhyming, so that it reads aloud well, although "this wheel's really broke" seems a poor choice of grammar for a beginning reader. The plot is only mildly interesting, but the moral and material value of helping one another for mutual benefit is clearly presented. The five heroes are depicted as sturdy men in a variety of outfits from the miller's peasantlike belted tunic, cap, and high boots to the mason's coonskin cap and red suspenders. The blocky, cartoon-style illustrations done in warm crayon-textured colors are lively, amusing, and suit the laborers well. The picture layout is nicely varied, with full pages, double-page spreads, and vignettes both opening into white space and firmly enclosed in the background setting. The typography is well spaced and crisp, and the vocabulary simple but entertaining. --Patricia Pearl, First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA
