About this Item

First edition, 1973. Tall 8vo, cloth in dust jacket, inscribed by Devon Francis, 'For Al Bennett -- who not only taught me to fly but introduced me to the joy of it, with appreciation for his contribution to this book, Devon, February 1973' 256 pp., illustrated, about fine in very good dust jacket. Devon Francis was aviation editor for the Associated Press and learned to fly with Bennett in 1939 in order to better cover the field. Alfred Bennett, a pioneer in flight-school aviation, who was at one time a vice president at Taylorcraft light-plane company and who ran a flight school in Hightstown, NJ where he was friendly with a number of luminaries in the aviation world including Wolfgang Langewiesche, Eric Sloane, and William Piper (of Piper Cub fame). Al Bennett's children were also pioneers of a sort - both his son and daughter were the youngest people ever to pilot a plane solo. Purchased from Al Bennett Jr. All Bennett is mentioned on p. 39 of this book as one who did 'stunts' with Cubs in order to highlight their prowess. Bookseller Inventory # C000021196
