Book Description Terrail, Paris, 1992. Hard Back. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Girodroux, Bernard - Art Director (illustrator). First Edition. 223 Pages. Beautiful red boards with gold lettering on the front board and the spine. Book and jacket are in Brand New condition. No marks of any sort. There are 170 Illustrations in Color. Alphonse Mucha, born in Bohemia in 1860, led the itinerant life typical of young Central European artists at the time: Vienna, Munich, and then Paris in 1890, where he studied at the Academies Julian and Colarossi. He haunted all the gathering places of the other impoverished artists and took on a variety of jobs as an illustrator for several different publishing houses. In 1897, Mucha suddenly had a lucky break: Sarah Bernhardt fell in love with the poster that he had designed for the opening of Gismonda. Soon, all the walls of Paris were covered with his work, from theater announcements to billboards advertising champagne and biscuits . The Mucha Style became synonymous with Art Nouveau. The 1900 Paris World's Fair (Exposition Universelle) catapulted him to international fame. Newspaper typefaces, books, wrapping paper as well as fashions, jewelry, furniture and interior decoration and countless everyday objects bear witness to the artist's extraordinary impact on daily life at the turn of the century. Swept up by this success, Mucha traveled back and forth to America, where he continued his career. After some years he decided to devote himself entirely to his obsessive dream, a series of paintings celebrating The Slav Epic. When the 1918 Armistice gave independence to Czechoslovakia, Alphonse Mucha returned to Prague for patriotic reasons to work on this great project until his death in 1939. The expression "Mucha Style" became synonymous with Modern Style (or Art Nouveau). In 1897, Alphonse Mucha attained the high point of his Art. His posers adorned the walls and billboards in Europe and America; his decorative motifs, his calendars, boxes and postcards appeared in everyone's homes. Mucha was the father of a style that we rediscover today with delight. Size: 10" x 12". Seller Inventory # 20119
