About the Author:

HUALING NIEH was born in Hubei, China, in 1925. She moved to Taiwan in 1949 and to the United States in 1965. She co-founded the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, which she co-directed with Paul Engle until 1988. In 1976, over 300 writers nominated Nieh and Engle for the Nobel Peace Prize, and in 1982 Nieh received the Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts from the Governors of Fifty States. Nieh is the author of 22 books of fiction in Chinese, and her work has been translated into eight languages.
