Synopsis: In Mullet Roar and Other Stories by an Outer Banker, William K. "Billy" Brown takes his readers on a virtual tour of North Carolina's Outer Banks from the 1950s to present day with this unique collection of lively stories. His journey from boyhood to manhood is shaped by the freedom he has to explore the Outer Banks in their wild and pristine states. He carries you with him as he fishes and hunts from the Gulf Stream of the Atlantic to the mainland woods, and all the islands and sounds in between. In his humorous, heartfelt, and humble style Billy Brown, a true outdoorsman, describes the very essence of an Outer Banker. As an added bonus, Mr. Brown even teaches his artful technique of clamming and offers a few hearty and wholesome recipes as well.
About the Author: William K. "Billy" Brown was born in 1940 in Wilmington, North Carolina to Aycock Brown and Esther Styron Brown. His father was from Happy Valley, NC and his mother was from Ocracoke on the Outer Banks. At the age of ten Billy Brown's family moved permanently to Manteo, on Roanoke Island where he quickly developed the skills for his lifetime passion of hunting and fishing. Brown graduated from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, in 1972 after being drafted into the Army in 1965, serving the 7th Cavalry, First Cavalry Division in the famous Ia Drang Valley battle. During his college years, Brown spent the summers working on charter boats on the Outer Banks, an activity in which he had been engaged since the age of ten. By the young age of eighteen, Billy Brown stood for his captain's license in Norfolk, Va., leading to a forty-year professional career on the water. After graduation from college, Brown was a social studies teacher for close to thirty years in Manteo. He taught school in the winter and "carried" fishing parties in the summer. Over the years, the author-teacher-waterman developed a love for visual art, painting mostly landscapes from Dare County or the Outer Banks - places that are"in his blood." Many of these paintings are visual representations of the texts Brown has written. Billy Brown lives on Roanoke Island where he gardens, raises ducks and still fishes almost every morning. He travels the road to Oregon Inlet every day to continue his vigil at the fishing center, where he is an active member on the Board of Directors. Billy is married to Linda Creekmore Brown, and they have three children and five grandchildren.
