Book Description William Morrow & Co, New York City, 1930. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 2nd Printing. Original yellow cloth with titles stamped in black on the spine as well as skyline image on front board revealing title in yellow. Unclipped wrapper showing a view of downtown Manhattan has a 1"x1/2" piece missing from the top of the front cover. Else Near Fine with a bit of soiling to the rear cover. A very attractive example and quite uncommon. Inscribed by the author on the ffep, " To Honorable Albert Conway, You have solved so many crimes for in the interest of humanity, this bit of invention will prove tame reading for you. So please accept it as a token of my regard - and my admiration. Faithfully, Arthur Proctor, May thirty first". Judge Albert Conway, whose long legal career spanned both World Wars, ultimately became the New York's Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals and previously had held many positions appointed by then Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt with whom he was a close associate. Though the inscription has the date but not year, at the time this book was published in 1930, Judge Conway was working in his own high-profile law firm. But up until 1920, he had been an Assistant District Attorney which puts the inscription in better context. Also included is a series of three written letters, all signed, "The Author", on Proctor's letterhead. Each letter, referencing a specific page in the book, (suggesting the readers progress through it), playfully prompts the Judge to guess "who did it" and to then to "go on with the story", to find out. (NYCourts.gov) A very interesting association and scarce in any condition and rare as such in high grade, the inscription, and the included letters. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 001635
