Bright yellow cloth boldly stamped in black with silhouette design of a city skyscape. Second printing. INSCRIBED ON THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER BY THE AUTHOR: "TO HONORABLE ALBERT CONWAY [Conway was Chief Justice of the New York State Court of Appeals) / YOU HAVE SOLVED SO MANY CRIMES IN THE INTEREST OF HUMANITY, THIS BIT OF INVENTION WILL PROVE TAME READING FOR YOU. SO PLEASE ACCEPT IT AS A TOKEN OF MY REGARD--AND MY ADMIRATION./ FAITHFULLY--ARTHUR PROCTER/ MAY THIRTY FIRST". Additionally there are laid in three handwritten notes from Procter on his letterhead to Judge Conway, each referring to the conclusion of a chapter in the book. The first reads: "Page 48/ Dear Judge/ Whom do you suspect here? (the Judge's answer)./ Are you sure? Well, lets go on with the story/ Yours, The Author"; the second is headed "Page 156" and reads "Dear Judge/ Whom do you suspect here? /(the Judge answers)/ Oh you still believe Mr. A. did it. I always knew you would stick by your guns--you're noted for having the courage of your convictions./ Well, lets go on with the story."; and the third, headed "Page 249" reads "And now whom do you suspect?/ Oh, its still Mr. A--but with a "reservation"./ It's that reservation which indicates the "open" mind--the (___) to a real thinker, which you are./ So, let's go on with the story." A tight, fine example, yellow cloth binding still brilliant. In dust jacket which features an aerial real-photo view of Manhattan Island from the Battery looking north. Shallow chip to the top egde of the front panel, some rubbing to the rear gutter fold, even soiling to the rear panel. Original price intact on flap. Bookseller Inventory # E4947
