Synopsis: Published on the occasion of an exhibition of the same name organized by the University Art Museum, Santa Barbara. In a unique collection of color photos from museums around the world, Ross (photography, U. of Calif., Santa Barbara) deconstructs the formal, public display of art and artifacts, and reveals the museum itself as a cultural product embodying both the sublime and the ridiculous. 10x12". Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.

From Publishers Weekly: In these color photographs of art and natural history museums and their holdings, Ross, who teaches at UC Santa Barbara, wields considerable wit in constructing images of the institutions as we don't usually see them. In some cases, an animal's spirit is shown to have survived the taxidermist's art, flouting the authority of the knife (the face of a stuffed rhinoceros peers skeptically through glass, as though once again regnant). Elsewhere, held in suspended animation, victims in display cases seem sustained only by artifice, creating illusions of a perfectly orderly, hierarchical nature brought home to roost. In pure fun, Ross portrays a classical nude sculpture appearing to take cover from onlookers in a museum corner, and offers a delightful closeup of stuffed lions engaged in ferociously kitsch battle. But his thoughtful book, an exhibition catalogue, does more than amuse; it leaves readers with disquieting thoughts of predator and prey in museums and culture at large.

Book Description Aperture Book, Santa Barbara, CA, 1989. Oversize Hardback. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Book is in excellent condition with light bumping to two page-end corners; covers in 1/4 purple cloth, gold print at spine. No other flaws. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no other blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows the slightest signs of shelf wear only, some sunning at upper spine, no tears. From the blurb inside d.j.: "The modern museum is both the showcase of our culture-and its cluttered attic. In this beautiful and at times hilarious book, prize-winning photographer Richard Ross examines this modern institution, focusing both on the display of art and artifacts for the public and on the phenomenon of the museum itself-as a place that reflects what we think is worth preserving, a place where exhibits teach us what we're supposed to know. The lush color photographs were taken in museums all over the world, from the British Museum in London to the Museum Nationale d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris to New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. In loving detail Ross depicts displays that range from the pompous to the ridiculous, the lavish to threadbare. At the same time he takes us behind the scenes, to the storerooms and preparation areas, to show us the seams and rough edges of the museum experience." Size: XL. Photography.
