About this title

This volume celebrates one of America's great museums.

From Library Journal:

From the Houston Public School Art League of 1900 through the 1924 public opening as the first art museum founded in Texas, to the present Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the collection of over 20,000 objects represented here exemplifies the taste of its eight decades of patrons. Showy instead of scholarly, self-important instead of substantial, this is a glossy example of the "outstanding hits" format rather than a serious collection catalog. All departments, from Tribal Arts to Photography, Ancient to 20th Century Art, are represented by excellent illustrations and pedestrian commentaries. The dynamic institution delineated here may well be "one of America's great museums," but if so, it is not well served by this oversized bit of public relations.
