About this Item

This is a set of six books in full leather with red and gold leather spine labels. Each book has two bookplates inside the front cover. The first book plate has a family crest with a griffin clutching a striped rod and the words Ung Je Serviray in an oval around with a crown on top and Porchester in lettering beneath. Added later and partially overlapping the Porchester bookplates is the bookplate of Rudyard Kipling. This is the older version of the plate with the year 1894 and the initials ULK in the small box at the right bottom. The picture on the bookplate is the man seated on the back of the elephant. On some volumes the top and bottom borders of the Kipling bookplate has been trimmed to prevent covering the Porchester bookplate. The books themselves are a collection of articles primarily concerning farming and agriculture in mid 1700's England. The volumes are all in decent shape with raised spine bands and glit decoration on the spines and cover edges. The corners are worn as are the spine ends and most volumes have some cracking at outer hinges. Each volume also has old cut and pasted lettering inside the front cover a T and an F and two numbers. I assume this was some type of library filing system, probably from the Porchester days as the Kipling bookplate covers some of the numbers on some volumes. One volume has a Porchester bookplate inside the front cover and upside down inside the back cover. I think this may have been a mistake made by someone who had the book upside down while putting in bookplates. Volume two has a folding map that protrudes beyond the page edges and it has become a bit worn because of that. Page edges a bit yellowed and light to moderate foxing here and there. A truely unique set of books. Bookseller Inventory # 7190
