Originally published 1991 by the Michigan State University Press, East Lansing, Michigan. "Izibongo is a plural noun which can be translated as 'praises,' 'praise names,' or 'praise poems.' . . . It constitutes a genre of poetry widely used in southern Africa by speakers of Zulu, Ndebele, and Xhosa. It is also a genre related to Tswana praise poems (maboko) and Sotho praise poems (lithoko.)" Originals on the even-numbered pages, English translations on the facing right-hand pages. Book shows rub to front cover, particularly near spine. About the Author:

Liz Gunner has written widely on African orature and literature. She is professor of English studies at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg.

Mafika Gwala is a South African writer and editor.
