De Vries began an intensive study of Oenothera lamarckiana, a species of evening primrose, in 1886, after noticing a number of variants of the species. During his studies new forms appeared, and de Vries was able to formulate his Laws of Mutation, suggesting that new species developed through a series of small, random, and not necessarily useful changes ("mutations" or "saltations"). His theory buttressed Darwin's evolutionism and explained the progress of changing characteristics within species. "Although his Oe. lamarckiana mutants were later discredited (the plant was shown to be a permanent hybrid), the principle of mutation, or sudden change in species, remains a cornerstone of evolution theory" (Norman).
