Synopsis: With an annual visitorship of 100,000, the Mütter Museum has become America's most popular medical museum. Featured on the Discovery channel and The Late Show with David Letterman, the Mütter Museum's collection originated more than 150 years ago with Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter, a 19th-century Philadelphia surgeon who collected unique anatomic and pathological materials for his personal teaching "museum": bones; air-dried, varnished anatomic specimens; plaster casts; fluid-preserved specimens; wax and papier-mâché models; and oil and watercolor paintings. The collection grew to include such oddities as the death cast and connected livers of the legendary Siamese twins Chang and Eng and the skeleton of a 7' 6" giant from Kentucky. This calendar features new contemporary images of the collection by a distinguished group of photographers who have turned their attention to the unexpected art inherent in the study of medical science.
