About this Item

First U.S. Edition. 8vo. pp. 159, [5 blank]; 11, [1] adverts. Bound in original brown blind stamped publisher’s cloth. A tight and attractive copy with minor professional repairs to the head cap and to the fore-edge of the front cover. The rear blank free end paper is lacking. The interior pages are generally clean; many leaves are still uncut / unopened. James Philip Bailey (1816-1902) was a British spasmodic poet best known for his long poem "Festus." His book, "The Mystic and other poems" (first printed in London, 1855), describes the journey of the divine soul or spirit. The work contains wild visionary, cosmological and esoteric imagery – i.e. "Thence, hawk-like, through the purgatorial air, / And many-regioned aether, peaceful, pure, / Soul-quickening, soared he to the crescent moon, / And sailed the sky’s abysmal sea of suns / In ark crystalline, manned by beamy gods, / To drag the deeps of space, and net the stars, ".
