About this Item

"Early in the seventeenth century English explorers and settlers discovered an Algonkian-speaking Indian tribe on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. They were called Nantichokes, meaning "tide-water people." Reputed to be sorcerers and practitioners in the supernatural arts, the Nantichokes were extolled by many other tribes. The Maryland provincial authorities who feared that the Nantichoke head chief (known as an Emperor) might induce the Indians to join together in resisting the English, deposed and bribed others to become subservient to Lord Baltimore." Negligible marks to jacket sunned at spine, minor handling signs/imperfections to edges; brown boards, gilt title on spine, front board very slightly lifting/warping at fore edge; binding tight, content fine.
