About this Item

Gresham Books, Unwin Brothers, 1979. UK 1st. Edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, VG/VG CONDITION, ( dj is price clipped & very small round indent on page edge- minor corner bumps ), xii, 230 pages, Drawings.----------------------------------------------------------This facsimile reprint is a Second Edition of a work first published in 1860 under the title of The Naval Cadet's Guide: or Seaman's Companion. The title of Seamanship was adopted for the second and subsequent editions. The first edition contained 148 pages and 30 plates of illustrations, so that the second edition was much enlarged.----------------------------------------------------Instruction by the mode of question and answer is a feature of the book, and the drawings are of a high technical quality. For the modern student of sail, rigging and naval routines of the 19th century this is a fine reference book. It is only in the last fifty years that other books on rigging have adequately covered the subject with both text and drawings of technical accuracy. Nare's Seamanship remains, however, a most interesting and informative book with virtually all the essential background for modern readers studying ship-handling under sail in the old `sailing navy' days. At the time this edition was first published steam was just coming in and the preface contains some immortal words on the subject of sail and steam including the oft-quoted remark that `there is no greater fallacy than to suppose that ships can be navigated on long voyages without masts or sails, or safely commanded by officers.
