About this Item

INSCRIBED AND SIGNED on the first blank as follows: "To the editor / Allugrergus (?) Moving (?) Jonnal (Forward ?) - / With Compliments / of the author / US Hollister / Denver / 1903." 4to. (25 cm.) 144p. Title page dated drawing by Frank P. Sauerwen (plus two others by Sauerwen reproduced in engravings), 10 full-page color captioned photo plates of Navajo blankets from the authors collection, frontispiece captioned engraving plus 24 other captioned engravings from photographs, many full-page engravings and one showing the author. The various photographers include the following: Frank P. Sauerwen, P.E. Harroun, Sumner W. Matteson, Charles H. Goodman, Professor George H. Pepper and the author. Decorated endpapers. Red cloth over beveled boards with letters in gilt on the front cover and with a black and white photo inset with a decorative border on the front cover. Some wear to extremities with two corners just barely worn through, spine darkened, top and bottom of spine just beginning to fray, cloth somewhat soiled with evidence of light silverfish grazing, small splatter stain at lower left corner of rear board, all photos and engravings present and in fine condition, pages slightly wavy from previous moisture, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. This is a relatively rare signed volume on the Navajo and contains especially fine photographic images of various types of blankets. It is difficult to make out the name of the editor to whom this volume is inscribed. Born in Ulster County, New York in 1838, Uriah Schutt Hollister was Vice President and general manager, Continental Oil Company (1894-?); President Era Mining Company; horticulturist; Civil War veteran; and post commander G.A.R. [source: Denver Public Library] Hollister was a member of Company K from the 13th Wisconsin Infantry and held the ranks of Lt. and Captain. [source: Wisconsin Historical Society] He died in 1929 and is buried Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Los Angels County, CA. In a review of this book in AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGY, F.W. Hodge wrote, "the best that can be said is that its colored plates are excellent; in text, taken altogether it is worse than worthless." Howes H-603 "Legend has it that U.S. Hollister had only 500 copies of his book printed in 1903 and before he had sold half of the printed copies, a fire occurred in the building where the books were presumably stored, thus destroying all remaining copies. Accordingly the first edition of this book is regarded as quite rare, in spite of its subsequent edition publications that continue to this date in the twenty-first century." [from FRANK PAUL SAUERWEN: AN EARLY MATER PAIINTER OF THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST by Michel R. Grauer]. Bookseller Inventory # 006830
