About this Item

This is the fourth edition of The New Vision, the first being 1928. Rebound by Johanna Jalowetz circa 1948-49 in rough-weave cream linen with "moholy-nagy" in typeface cut from the missing dustjacket and neatly inset with beveled edges lower left portion front cover. Jalowetz, along with her husband musicologist and conductor Heinrich Jalowetz, were on the faculty of Black Mountain College, Asheville, NC, where she taught voice and book binding. This the ownership copy of artist Sewell Sillman, with his signature at the bottom of the front fly. It was bound especially for him when he was a young student at Black Mountain in the late 40s. Sillman transferred to Yale when Josef Albers, who also taught at Black Mountain, joined the New Haven faculty. Sillman had a dual career as artist and publisher, and, with designer Norman Ives, became publisher for Albers, photographer Walker Evans, among others. Bookseller Inventory # 010826

Store Description

Johnnycake Books trades in rare and collectible books of most kinds, principally in fields of literature, illustrated, childrens, architecture/design, gardening and photography. We try to offer books that are a little unusual, offbeat and unexpected: most have a strong visual or design appeal. Our descriptions present our inventory as creatively and colorfully as possible, with occassional editorial commentary. We regard condition of our books as critical to our service: most are very good or better, in collectible condition. We are generally conservative in describing a book, even if that means it doesn't sound as good as it actually might be. We welcome your comments directly at or visit our website Best wishes in your book collecting. Dan Dwyer
