This volume has a crucial significance for understanding Nietzsche's work and influence on subsequent philosophy. Heidegger shows that Nietzsche himself used eternal recurrence as his essential counterthrust against nihilism~ that "historical process whereby the dominance of the 'transcendent' becomes null and void, so that being loses its worth and meaning" ~ hence the concept's surpassing importance for contemporary humanity as a whole. Volume II encompasses two lectures of Heidegger's series on Nietzsche. The first, given in 1937 at the University of Freiburg, is "Nietzsche's Fundamental Metaphysical Position in Western Thought: The Doctrine of Eternal Recurrence of the Same," in which Heidegger develops his controversial thesis on the importance of Nietzsche's unpublished writings, or Nachlass, for any comprehensive interpretation of his philosophy. The other is a public lecture given in 1953, "Who Is Nietzsche's Zarathustra?," which is a masterful and meticulously detailed analysis of some of Nietzsche's published works, in particular his masterpiece, Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Together they constitute the high point of Heidegger's series of lectures and his most mature reflection on the whole of Nietzsche's philosophy. The principal argument of Heidegger's Nietzsche~ that Nietzsche is a metaphysician, indeed, the last metaphysician~receives its most richly suggestive formulation in Volume II with Heidegger's exegesis of the complex, yet central, doctrine of eternal return. He locates the concept's genesis and domain, outlines its variegated manifestations in Nietzsche's thought, and, most importantly, shows that eternal recurrence of the same is neither a scientific hypothesis nor a religious belief, but a thought. This metaphysical act of thinking, neither predetermined nor predictable, can be a potent source of illumination for reflection and speculation by the individual thinker. Heidegger also provides a close, revelatory reading of some of the most striking episodes of Nietzsche's Zarathustra, among them, "On the Vision and the Riddle" and "The Convalescent." He builds on this reading in "Who is Nietzsche's Zarathustra'?," pressing forward to the crucial theme of redemption from the spirit of revenge, revealing Nietzsche as an essential harbinger of Heidegger's own analysis of human mortality in Being and Time. In his concluding "Analysis," translator David Farrell Krell examines Heidegger's use of the Nietzschean Nachlass, and provides invaluable commentary on this thought~provoking interpretation of Nietzsche's most difficult and challenging thought. Krell's analysis places the contents of Volume II in relation to the other volumes of Nietzsche and situates the Nietzsche~Heidegger "dialogue" within the larger context of the history of Western philosophy, underscoring its scope and crucial significance to the mature formulation of Heidegger's own thought. Martin Heidegger (1889~1976) is one of the twentieth century's most important and influential philosophers. He is the author of Being and Time, On the Way to Language, and Poetry, Language, Thought, as we. Seller Inventory # 2201401
