About this Item

Eighth edition. Original claret limp cloth, lettered gilt on spine and upper cover and blocked gilt with hieroglyphics and cartouches on upper cover. Combed marbled endpapers and edges. 8vo. 7.25 x 5 inches (18 x 13 cms). xxvipp, 674pp. With 2 maps (one double-page and one folding) and numerous illustrations in text. Lacks front free endpaper, cloth a little rubbed, front inner hinge a little weak, else in very good condition. Wallis Budge wrote this comprehensive and detailed guide to the Nile, its antiquities, excavations, history and topography at the suggestion of his friend, Thomas Cook, the pioneer of organised tourism and this book was given free of charge to all travellers on Cook's tourist steamers and dhahabiyyahs that plied the Nile between Cairo and Khartoum. It transcends the level of the usual tourist guide, however, and is a scholarly work in its own right that concisely encapsulates the author's vast expertise on the Nile and ancient and modern Egypt.
