Born in Hamburg, Hirsch (1808-1888) was a "rabbi and writer [and] leader and foremost exponent of Orthodoxy in Germany in the 19th century. " Despite his Orthodaxy, Hirsch felt that a well-educated Jew would also be familiar with secular subjects, such as math, modern languages, and physical sciences, and would his Jewish ethics to guide his involvement in the secular world.
