About this Item

First edition. PRESENTATION COPY, signed by Mailer and inscribed by the editor to recipient of the letter appearing on pp.26-27 herein, "To Adeline [Lubell Naiman], Best wishes, Mike." From an edition of 150 copies signed by Mailer and Lennon, of which 10 were hors commerce and 40 were for presentation. 124 pages including index; iIlustrated with photographs of Mailer and various items related to AN AMERICAN DREAM (book covers, movie posters, magazine covers, etc.). Blue cloth boards stamped in silver; issued without dust jacket. Adeline Lubell-Naiman, a Little, Brown editor, convinced Mailer to submit the first 200 pages of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD to her publisher and talked up the manuscript; but she suggested historian and critic Bernard DeVoto read the manuscript. He recommended not publishing it. Mailer submitted it to Rinehart, and the rest is history. Still, over the years, Lubell-Naiman and Mailer remained close, and in the summer of 1968 she played "Adeline McCarthy," a president of a women's college in Mailer's film "Maidstone." Fine.
