OCLC: 526144 The author describes her extensive travels in Japan, China, Hong Kong, India and the Holy Lands of the Middle East. The book begins with a substantial account of the life of the author Margaretha Weppner. Margaretha was from an affluent family (one of 12 children), whose wealth became greatly diminished for unknown reasons. She had a common school education, but succeeded in learning several languages as well as music. As a young woman she went to Nancy where she taught German in a private school whilst she perfected her French. By turn she went to England where she taught German and French and learned English. She later added Italian to her stable of linguistic skills. At some point she found herself engaged to a Polish gentleman M. "De L." Her reluctance caused her to draw out her journey to Paris to make the match and when he presented his "references" as required by French law, Margaretha found them quite suspicious. At that point he asked her for money because his funds were tied up -- arrangements fell apart and she dispatched him as "a swindler." He was arrested on several charges, and Margaretha left France to travel to America. From America, she continued her travels, sailing from San Francisco to Japan, then on to China and Hong Kong, Saigon, Singapore and Java. Trekking onward to India, she eventually spent time in the Holy Land, Egypt and finally returned to Germany via Trieste. This book represents her narrative of these travels.
