First edition of paper containing "a remarkable exposition of the glycogenic function of the liver" (Harblit, One Hundred Books) by Bernard (1813-78), a founder of experimental medicine and a likley the greatest physiologist of France. Contained in one complete volume of Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Seances de l'Academie des Sciences, Tome 31. 1850. In French. Thick 4to., 956p., original plain printers wraps with mounted printed paper spine label Bernard article on pp. 571-575. Bernard reports his discovery that "the liver builds up certain highly complex substnces, including glycogen, form the nutrients brought to it by the the blood " (Dibner). Many other important papers in the volume by different scientists. Good plus, cover wrapper is torn, chipped and worn, title page a bit toned and frayed on edges. Binding secure, no ownership marks.
