About the Author:

Friedrich von Hardenberg, who wrote under the pen name Novalis, died at the age of 29 in 1801. He had contracted consumption, but his death might have been accelerated due to the shock of the sudden death of his fourteen-year-old brother. His "Hymns to the Night" is considered one of the great pillars of German Romanticism.
