About this Item

Small octavo. 82ff. Manuscript prayerbook in the Slavic language of Sorbian, originally from a small region in eastern Germany. Calligraphed by Karla Duchek with 147 pages of prayers in a gothic script with calligraphic titles and initials, colorful painted borders, and decorative tailpieces. Also includes two published engravings of St. Theresa and Mary Magdalene, as well as devotional images in pen & ink and watercolor. Bound in contemporary red stained vellum, which shows some wear along extremities; internally, there is a fair amount of marginal finger-soiling, and a tear to penultimate text leaf along the inside of the painted border. Largely extinct in Europe, Sorbian survives in portions of Texas, which was the destination of a mass migration in the mid-19th century. Bookseller Inventory # 18172
