Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. 464p. index. bibliography. The Naga tribes inhabit the south-eastern foothills of the Himalayas--the border region between Indian and Burma. Feared as headhunters and shunned by the inhabitants of the plains the Nagas developed a unique material culture and oral tradition. Changes from the British government and Baptist missionaries began to change much of their feared behavior. After 1947 the Naga Hills were forcibly integrated into the newly formed Indian Union. The result was a bloody war that raged for more than 50 years only recently have things developed so the culture, art, and identity of the Nagas seen in terms of a unique aspect of a previously neglected people of unique genius.
