About this Item

"The Naked and the Dead" was printed on cheap wartime paper and that was not a good thing for a book that was to have such a great impact and lasting importance. However, this copy, despite signs of wear, has many attractive attributes and is in collectable condition. Binding: clean, tight and straight, hinges firm. There is a half inch vertical tear on the upper spine and indications of wear about 1.2 inches long on the upper board where it meets the spine. Front board clean, with about 1/3" wear on the lower spine, and a slightly bumped lower front edge. On the rear, indications of wear along the spine for about half its length, and wear on the lower edge of the spine. The rear board as a whole is intact and black color firm. The Rinehart copyright "R" is present on the copyright page. The author's signature is clear and unmarred in blue ink on the first white page after the ffep. DJ: Chipped at top and bottom of spine, worn at various places on left and right sides of spine, at creases and edges. The front of the DJ is whole and all letters and colors are clear. The DJ is unclipped and unmarked and the price ($4.00) is clear and unobstructed. No bookplates or signatures other than the author's. The DJ is the scarce first-issue DJ, with an introductory blurb by Stanley Rinehart on the rear flap. This copy is an exceptional value, and came from the renowned Comstock Collection. One of the great American novels of the 20th Century, and one of the great war novels of any era, still considered by many Mailer's greatest work. This copy is a true first edition and SIGNED By Mailer. In 2011 a dealer raised doubts about the authenticity of Mailer's signature, specifically a line through the "l" of the inked signature, so that it looks like "Norman Maiter." I checked with two veteran dealers who are also appraisers, both of whom knew Mailer and the late Roland Comstock, from whose famous collection the book was originally purchased. Here's what they said: "I believe it's good. I've seen hundreds of Norman's signatures and I admit he doesn't cross the "L" (NB -- he meant Mailer crossed the L) but the rest looks right. I think he was just in a hurry. In talking to Roland over the years I'm pretty sure he got these either in person or sent them to Mailer, and I know Mailer would not have someone else sign it for him." Conclusion: rest assured, the signature is genuine. Bookseller Inventory # 090240
