Title: The Naked Lunch
Publisher: Olympia, Paris
Publication Date: 1959
Book Condition: Very Good+
Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine
Edition: First Edition, First Issue.
Green printed wraps; dust jacket. Spine tips just a little scuffed; very light rubbing along edges of covers; ownership signature on half-title page. Dust jacket remarkably nice and bright, with very tiny chips at extremities. Though excerpts of "Naked Lunch" or "Interzone" had been published in America in 1958, the response wreaked such havoc upon "The Black Mountain Review," "Chicago Review," and "Big Table," that Olympia became the first publisher to dare a complete edition. A landmark publication in the history of American literature and debates about obscenity, this edition of Burroughs's seminal work (with the publisher's addition of "The" to the title) differs from the later American edition, which wasn't released as a complete edition in America until 1962 (by Grove Press). A non-linear, "cut-up" text created over many years from Burroughs' vignettes, episodes, and notes (and compiled with help from Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg) debates raged over not just its explicit subject matter, but over its narrative technique as well. A major contribution to the literature of The Beats. Bookseller Inventory # D5946
