Synopsis: My Name is Ick introduces children and parents to Ick, a gentle creature in a hurry to grow up. As this character faces what must be a traumatic experience in the life of a young caribou, the reader is introduced to phrases containing wonderfully predictable rhyming words. Rhyming is a very important skill for children to develop as a precursor to reading. Not only does it sharpen listening skills and encourage sound manipulation, but it's also a lot of fun.
About the Author: Judy Almy, CCC/SLP, spent six fascinating years employed as a speech-language pathologist with the Northwest Arctic Borough School District in Kotzebue, Alaska. She then moved on to the beautiful city of Valdez, where she currently works for the Valdez City School District. She is particularly interested in helping children to establish strong phonemic awareness skills, and therefore uses many rhyming activities during her therapy sessions. Judy enjoys fishing, reading, rhyming, and adding to her unbelievably extensive puppet collection.
