Synopsis: THE DARK SIDE OF THE AMERICAN DREAM Born to privilege and wealth, Hong Ha Nguyen enjoyed the best education and traveled around the world—but was still considered a second-class citizen in her native Vietnam, where females were expected to be obedient. Any defiance on her part would mean being cut off by her family, with no chance of returning home. So her fate was sealed when she chose to marry an American and follow him to the United States, where her nightmare really began. Within months she was friendless, penniless, unemployed, pregnant, and hiding from her homicidal husband in a women’s shelter. Hong Ha’s extraordinary odyssey through the dark side of the American dream took her across the country and back. Through a labyrinth of treachery, violence, sexual abuse, custody battles, and financial ruin, she embarked on a constant quest to start her life over once again. My Name is Red River is a frank, brutal, yet still uplifting account of one remarkable woman’s resourcefulness, strength, and tenacity and an unforgettable addition to the canon of the American immigrant experience.
