About this Item

First Edition. Uncommon book, seldom seen for sale. William Rathbone IV was a member of the Society of Friends, but wrote this book in protest to what he saw as religious intolerance within the Friends. This is not a theological dissertation but a maliciously gossipy narrative that cites particular examples, and names the names. Rathbone's premise is found on p. 169: "To every individual belongs the SACRED RIGHT, and upon every individual devolves the IMPORTANT DUTY, not only to think, compare, and conclude for HIMSELF, in matters of religion; but also, according to his ability, to instruct, to assist, and to encourage his brother, in this essential employment." He was kicked out of the Quakers the year after this was published. Spine rebacked within last 10 years, original boards and spine label rubbed. Pages are clean with foxing to some, binding is very strong. Bookseller Inventory # mon0000093923
