About this Item

Elucidating the History of That Country & Describing Its Productions, Viz. Quadrupeds, Birds, Reptiles, Trees, Shrubs, Fruits, & Roots; With an Account of the Indians of Guiana and Negroes of Guinea by Capt. J.G. Stedman, Illustrated with 80 Elegant Engravings from Drawings made by the Author. Barre: Imprint Society, 1971. Two volumes, quarto, bound in quarter blue buckram and marbled boards, enclosed in a slip case of the same materials. 480 pages, plus plates. Text composed in Monotype Spectrum and foundry Romanee types, and printed letterpress by Joh. Enschede en Zonen, Haarlem, Holland. All the original copperplate line and aquatint engravings have been photographed directly from the originals and reproduced by offset lithography. The paper is Hahnemuhle Butten 911. Limited to 1950 copies, signed by Rudolf van Lier, who wrote the Introduction. A very good to fine copy. Fascinating account of Surinam society and the Dutch slave system in its realistic day-to-day aspects. Stedman's narrative, with its vivid pictures of inhuman behavior towards the slaves, was effective in bringing the Dutch into ill-repute as hard and cruel slave masters. Bookseller Inventory # 1082
