About this Item

JOHNSTON, [Arthur]. Narrative of the Operations of a Detachment in an Expedition to Candy, in the Island of Ceylon, in the Year 1804; with Some Observations on the Previous Campaign, and on the Nature of Candian Warfare, &c, &c, &c. London: Printed by and for C. and R. Baldwin, 1810. 1st ed. viii, 138, [1, errata] pp. Folding map. 3/4 calf and marbled boards, rebacked in period style with green morocoo spine label. Boards and corners lightly rubbed, foxed, map repaired, else a very good copy. Rare, OCLC locates only 10 copies. In February 1803 the English took Candy, capital of the Candy region in Ceylon, when the troops were leaving in June of that year, they were attacked and wiped out. A second expedition in September 1804 was planned for a number of columns to attack from different directions. The attack was called off at the last minute, but the column under the command of Capt. Arthur Johnston didn't receive word and, after great hardship, reached Candy. They discovered the city deserted, remained there for 56 hours, and were set upon by the Candians as they departed, losing 69 men and only learning that the entire operation had been unnecessary when they returned to their departure point in mid-October.
