About this Item

Issued as "No. 1" in "Appleton's Library of Popular Reading," Fremont's report of his expedition is regarded "as one of the most important single pieces of Western Americana" (Reese Co., Catalogue Ninety-four: A Selection of Books from Wright Howes' U.S.iana, item 467). Appleton's reprinting is from the Senate copy of the account: It is text only, issued without plates or maps. This is still good, strong, circumstantial writing about what really were wonders, and the publishers' choice to make it their herald narrative seems a masterstroke. 8vo. 186, [6 (adv.)] pp. Howes F-370 (erring in calling for a portrait and map); Sabin 25841; Wagner-Camp, Plains & Rockies, 115:7. Removed from a nonce volume, lacking original wrappers. Title-page with small repair to lower inner margin and numerical stamp in upper margin. Pages mostly clean, with occasional small spots.
